Why should anyone bother with omega 3? Well there are several reasons. Omega
3 is called an essential fatty acid for a reason- it's essential. Omega 3 is
thought to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and keep you heart beat
regular. Studies also suggest that omega 3 can help prevent cancer. If this
isn't enough incentive it can also improve your mood; it is thought that it
can improve brain cell receptors.
Rather than a strict dosage amount Omega 3 oils are ultimately about
balance. Ideally you need to balance your Omega 3 oils with the omega 6
oils. As a simple guide a 1:5 (omega 3, omega 6, respectively) ratio can be
applied. Omega 6 oils are commonly found in such foods as whole grains,
fried foods, etc. The typical diet will contain more whole grains (omega 6) than fish
(and other omega 3 rich foods), therefore you will lack the necessary
balance between this two essential oils- omega 3 and omega 6.
Omega 3 oils are found in such foods as fish (tuna, Atlantic salmon, etc),
walnuts, canola oil, and flaxseed oil to name a few. Quite a few people
realize that they do not have enough omega 3 intake from these sources so
they opt for an omega 3 supplement.
Certain governing bodies suggest that omega 3 oils are potentially dangerous
and therefore do not recommend you take more than 3 grams per day. This
evidence, at best, is inconclusive and many ignore this. However, further
studies are being done to interpret omega 3's affect on the body.
